Drs Tift, DeGuzman, Sweat, and Rosenthal at NAEMSP Jan 2023

Didactics

As with any post-graduate training program, we do have dedicated didactic time, but it will be a bit different than you probably experienced during residency. Given that we only have one fellow, most sessions are more of a small group discussion over textbook material rather than traditional lectures. Additionally, QA meetings for our primary EMS services, Hamilton Co EMS and LIFE FORCE Air Medical Service, can be counted towards didactic time. This is fortunate, as a great deal of learning EMS medical direction takes place during these meetings. Discussion over textbook material generally takes place on the weeks when there is no QA meeting, roughly every other week.

Additionally, We do host an EMS focused Journal Club a few times during the year.

Scholarly Activity

Just like residency, fellows are required to participate in scholarly activity during the fellowship. As you can imagine, completing a full project within a single year is very challenging, thus the ACGME recognizes three acceptable forms of scholarly activity:
-publication of a peer reviewed paper
-significant involvement in a research project
-a presentation at a professional society meeting

Resident Didactics

Naturally, the fellow is encouraged to present at resident didactics, and is welcome to attend resident didactics and journal club whenever available.

Conferences

The fellow typically attends at least two conferences during the year, the Air Medical Transport Conference (usually in October) and the NAEMSP Medical Director Course and Practicum (typically in January).

Attendance at other EMS-related conferences is encourages as able.
